ADVENT–PREPARING OUR HEARTS TO RECEIVE THE SAVIOR: The word “advent” means the coming or arrival of something, usually something extremely important. In Christian churches it is used to describe the four Sundays before Christmas, as a season of prayer.

Today, the Second Sunday of Advent, we are reminded that Christmas is a time for decorating.  We decorate our homes to prepare for Christmas.  Decorating should be a joyous activity for us.  In the same way, our lives should have outward expressions to show that we have received the Savior and wait for his return.  Jesus tells each of us to “let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven” (Matthew 5:16).

Advent reminds us that our good deeds have meaning because Christ has come. Christ still comes daily, as his light shines through our lives.  And Christ will come again to receive those who let the light of his love shine in this world.  “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever” (Hebrews 13:80).

ADVENT CANDLE – Today Patrick, Andrea, Tessa and Grace Rodgers will light the advent candle. The second Advent candle represents love.  The world needs love.  King Herod represents the opposite.  He responds to Jesus’ birth with jealousy, arrogance, and hatred.  Jesus came to confront evil with love.  Jesus brings the light of God into a world filled with hate and destruction.  Jesus calls us to be people of LOVE.

A CONGREGATIONAL MEETING is scheduled for today at 12:15 P.M.  The congregation will vote on the 2019 ministry budget.  Please plan to attend following the worship service.  If you have not returned your 2019 pledge card, please do so today.  Extra cards and envelopes are at the Welcome Center.  Boxes of 2019 offering envelopes are in church mailboxes today and will be mailed to regular givers in the coming week.

THE SANCTUARY CHOIR and the Drama Team will present “Our Coming Savior: A Service of Music and Drama” next Sunday, December 16 during the 10:45 A.M. worship service.  Dramas of Mary and Joseph, the Innkeeper and the Shepherds will be interspersed with musical numbers.

SIGN UP TODAY for the Family Christmas Program and Dinner next Sunday, December 16, beginning at 4:00 P.M. Everyone is invited to enjoy a fun evening of fellowship and good food catered by Mission BBQ.  The theme is “Around the World at Christmas”.  The cost is $5 for ages 12 and up, $3 for ages 3-11 and free for children 2 and under.  Please plan to bring a finger food dessert (brownies, cookies, cupcakes).

CALLING ALL ARTISTSWhat Christmas Means to Me

Pastor Steve invites everyone to participate in a Christmas Drawing Activity. Create a picture of “What Christmas Means to Me.” Use any kind of art materials, even original computer generated artwork. Guidelines are available in the narthex. Give your completed picture to Pastor Steve or place them in the box in the narthex by Sunday, December 16.

ADVENT DEVOTIONALS – Please pick up one of the free devotional booklets that the Diaconate has provided. There are two choices: “Journey into the Light” and “Peace on Earth” (family devotions).  Both booklets are available at the Welcome Center and provide daily Bible readings and devotions to help you prepare for Christmas.

THE MIDWEEK BIBLE STUDY meets on Wednesdays at 11:00 A.M. in Room B. The purpose of our Bible Study is to dig deeper into the Scriptures, strengthen each other’s faith, and build our bonds of Christian fellowship.  During this Advent season we are considering the 2nd Advent of Jesus.  This week (December 12) we will consider “The Day of Jesus’ Second Advent” in Matthew 24:27-44 and 1 Thessalonians 4:13-5:4.  All are welcome to bring a bag lunch and fellowship together following the study.

CHRISTMAS GOODIE BAGS – Our children get little bags of goodies for the Christmas Eve service. If you are planning to bring your children or grandchildren below the age of 10 to the service, please let Casey know so they will have a bag of goodies.

MANY THANKS from the Board of Missions to those who provided Angel Tree gifts for our family at Hope Gardens. A total of 15 gifts were given for Tanaya and her four children, the family that we hosted last March.

CONGRATULATIONS to George and Amy Hawthorne on the birth of a new grandson, Caleb William Farrell, on December 6. Parents are Jessica Hawthorne and Owen Farrell.

PLEASE JOIN THE DEACONS for silent prayer in the Boardroom on Sunday mornings, 9:00-9:30 A.M. Please enter and exit quietly.
