The Suffering Servant

Dear members and friends of Grace Baptist,

I hope this email finds you well.  I have been dealing with a virus the past few days, so my pondering this week will be brief.  If you didn’t have the chance to participate in our Adult Sunday School class on “Christian Nationalism” that started last Sunday, you can still join with us this week.

This Sunday we’ll conclude our sermon series on the Servant Songs of Isaiah.  The final servant song is the most well known of the four passages in Isaiah.  Our text is from Isaiah 52:13-53:12, and it’s known as the suffering servant.  Who is the suffering servant?  This is a question that has been asked by Biblical scholars for ages.

As Christians are first answer may be to reach for the answer to every children’s sermon question.  It’s Jesus.  Yes, the suffering servant is Jesus.  We know Jesus more deeply and richly in light of the Prophet Isaiah’ poetry of the nameless suffering servant.  But the suffering servant is not just Jesus and the suffering servant is not just for Christians.

This Sunday, we’ll explore what this final servant song has to reveal and teach us today.  Both in its original context and in light of Jesus’ death and resurrection.

See you on Sunday,

Pastor David
