From the Pastor – May 2016

It only took about four months, but on April 17 I finally got around to finishing a series of messages entitled “Sharing Our Faith.” I want to use my column this month to continue that theme. After the service on April 17 I was talking with an old friend from my seminary days who happened to be worshiping with us. She said, “I have to tell you, your church is very friendly. I have visited numerous churches and in many of them no one even spoke to me. Your people made me feel at home.” That, of course, is a paraphrase of what she said, but I think I got the gist of it pretty close. I am always thrilled to hear a report like that about our church. Almost every week we have visitors to our worship service and we are given yet another opportunity and privilege to welcome them and to share our faith. The danger, of course, is that we can, intentionally or unintentionally, fall into the trap of neglecting or not noticing our guests. Sometimes we’re busy with our own family or catching up with friends before they’ve scooted out or dealing with a sick headache that requires a fast exit. Whatever the reasons, I feel certain that every visitor to Grace does not share the experience of my friend on April 17. Having said that, will you become a personal ambassador for Christ? Will you search out new people and personally welcome them before church and/or after the service? Will you introduce them to some of your friends? Will you help them fill out the guest book at the Welcome Center? Will you invite people away from home back to your house for a little Christian hospitality? Let the love of Christ shine through you and into the lives of our visitors. Then those who come to our church once will maybe return again and again and become part of us. I thank you in advance.
