From the Pastor – The Third Servant Song and an Invitation to Adult Sunday School Class

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

Since 1989 the NBC family of networks has broadcast a series of Public Service Announcements (PSAs) encouraging ideals such as education, diversity, and respect. The tagline of the PSAs is, “The more you know.”  The fundamental idea is that the more you know, the better individual and citizen you’ll become.  I’ve always appreciated these PSAs, including the traditional NBC chimes that accompanied them.  I share a belief in the fundamental idea.  However, knowledge for knowledge’s sake is incomplete.  Knowledge must be acted upon.

In our scripture texts for this Sunday we will listen to the 3rd Servant Song found in the prophet Isaiah chapter 50 verses 4-11.  In this passage we hear how the LORD God has imparted knowledge to the servant so that he can sustain the weary.  Have you ever felt weary?   Tired?  Drained?  Fatigued? We may feel physically weary for many reasons, but we can also feel spiritually weary.

This 3rd servant song in Isaiah addresses some of those reasons.  This Sunday we’ll seek to understand what leads to spiritual weariness and what steps we can take to renew our spiritual life, to move from weariness to vitality.

In closing I want to extend an invitation to everyone to our next series of Adult Sunday School classes starting this Sunday.  You can read more about the series which focuses on the topic of “Christian Nationalism” in the news and notes.  However, if you would like to begin thinking about this topic, I invite you to read the following essay titled:  “A Tale of Two Services.” by Brian Kaylor.

I look forward to seeing you in worship or on zoom on Sunday!

Pastor David
